In November 2010 my husband and I travelled close to Ethiopia for 3 weeks by community bus with a personal information. Vacation (specially bus journey) is a serious adventure and not for the faint hearted as there is long journey times (even extended if the bus breaks down) on improperly managed roadways. But it is an excellent way to get up shut and own and knowledge the lifestyle and culture of the locals.

Addis Ababa
We arrived at the airport at 3.30am. We experienced not booked any accommodation because of to our early arrival so we stayed at the airport until about 7am. A taxi agreed to choose us into the metropolis for USD$10. We went to the Ras Resort the place we had to wait until 9am to see if they experienced a home.
Travel Tip: We stayed at the Ras Resort 3 times due to its central site. The value involves breakfast which is dreadful but lunch and supper are good.

Bahir Dar
We stayed at the Ghion Resort on Lake Tana and did a boat cruise to the islands to see the painted churches. The Blue Nile Falls area is fairly but not value the very long bumpy ride to get there. Due to the fact damming the river, the waterfalls are certainly nothing at all like the posters exhibit.
Vacation Idea: Check out if a guide is integrated with your Lake Tana boat cruise. There was 9 of us on our boat. No guideline accompanied us on the boat besides for our personal information Samson. The very first island we frequented Samson acted as intrepreter usually we would have not recognized what we were being on the lookout at. The next island we visited the church manual spoke English.

Gonder
The abandoned castles are incredibly appealing and it is value hiring the guides within the gate.
Journey Idea: We stayed at the Belgez Pension which was low cost, clear and silent but the rooms had been very small and cramped. They do your washing for a pretty modest price – give to the cleaners in the early morning.

Simien Mountains
We did a one particular day 4WD working day journey with another traveller and our information Samson.
Travel Idea: We would have appreciated to have stayed right away even even though we are not trekkers, as the landscapes is breathtaking.

Lalibela
We used 2 evenings in Lalibela discovering the wonderful rock church buildings.
Journey Suggestion: Retain your entrance ticket handy as they will be checked at each church entrance.

Arba Minch
Arba Minch is a overnight bus quit between Addis Ababa and Jinka.
Vacation Tip: Devote an excess night on one of the stopovers and do the lake tour.

Jinka
We hired a 4WD locally to tour the key 3 tribes in the region (Mersi, Hamer and Karo tribes). We shared this cost with 3 other travellers who were being on the bus and stayed at the similar lodging as us.
Vacation Tip: Acquire your bus ticket to Addis Ababa early (at minimum 1 working day in advance) so you can get hold of a far better seat range otherwise you will uncover oneself caught at the back again of the bus on the 2 working day journey. Acquire excellent ear plugs so that you can block out the noise of the loud songs video clips enjoying.

Transportation
We used a range of transportation that integrated: community bus, minivan, 4WD and boat.
Travel Tip: If you uncover that quite a couple of you are heading in the very same route, it will be a lot more inexpensive and comfy to lease a minivan and driver like we did from Bahar Dar to Gondar (7 men and women).

Tour Guidebook
We employed the services of a private guideline. This was the initially time we have hired a guide for the whole excursion as a result of a new place. The guideline proved invaluable in keeping the touts absent (really worth the dollars by yourself), working with community tour operators and obtaining hotels.
Travel Suggestion: Use a private guide’s comprehensive knowledge and experience to enjoy Ethiopia by the eyes of a nearby.
